Catching up with Animation Studio Ghostbot

SLY_PromoArt01Since we reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, we bump into a number of devoted and talented local artists who are not afraid of working together to come up with very creative original content. One such group is Ghostbot, a small, but experienced, animation studio that has set up camp on the outskirts of San Francisco. Founded in 2004 by three young animators, they work tirelessly on a multitude of mediums, ranging from TV commercials to short films on the web to video games. With a deliberate and unique 2D style mixing pop sensibilities and cartoon art, they’ve produced and have worked on many projects that you may recognize, such as the Erin Esurance ad campaign and the painfully cute Happy Tree Friends animated series to name a few.

In the last few years, we got to know more about the studio and we’ve diligently followed and kept up to date with all their ventures. Recently, Ghostbot unveiled their newest endeavor – all game cinematics on the latest installment of the beloved Sly Cooper video game franchise for the PS3. The game’s titled Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and is out in retail right now – here’s a story trailer for the game featuring a lot of 2D-Ghostbot-goodness:

Ghostbot also had the great opportunity to create a five and a half minute animated short film that would reintroduce the characters in Sly Cooper and his gang to first-time viewers – the end result is the wonderfully charming Sly Cooper and the Gang: Timing is Everything:

It’s safe to say this on behalf of all Sly Cooper fans out there,  they did a fantastic job on Timing is Everything and it’s just so refreshing to see 2D animation in video games.

Fortunately, we got a chance to interview Alan Lau, one of the co-founders of Ghostbot, where we talk about the studio and their work on Sly Cooper, and we’ll publish it here next Monday, Feb. 18.

In the meantime, if you wanna see more from Ghostbot, check out their website or click on the Video Reels embedded below:
