Anno Dracula: Johnny Alucard by Kim Newman

annodraculajohnnyThe trend in Hollywood, comics and print these days are stories with vampires.  One popular series is by creator and award-winning author Kim Newman with his Anno Dracula character.  Johnny Alucard is the fourth novel in this series and is set right after the third book, Anno Dracula:  Dracula Cha Cha Cha.

The story kicks off in 1976 Romania countryside, where Franics Ford Coppola is shooting his epic Dracula film with Hollywood stars like Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Harvey Kitel and Harrison Ford.  Our vampire vixen Kate Reed is on set as a consultant and from there, Kate and Coppola befriend a young vampire named Ion Popescu.  After a couple of months, the trouble production is finished filming, Ion looks to America.

In America, Ion Popescu becomes an All-American vampire named Johnny Pop.  Pop meets the eccentric Andy Warhol at a party and they become fast friends.  With the increasing fame and money, vampire assassins take notice and try to kill Johnny Pop.  Pop survives the 1970s disco era!

Welcome to the 1980s.  Johnny Pop transforms into Johnny Alucard and this time he plans to take on Hollywood.  We find that Count Dracula is never truly dead, the blood flows deep in Johnny Alucard.  The story revolves around 3 vampire vixens: Kate Reed, Genevieve Dieudonne and Penelope Churchward.

Like Newman’s last book “Dracula Cha Cha Cha”, this novel is filled with Wikipedia references of that time (1976-1991) and Forest Gump-type meetings with stars and notable figures in history.  We get to learn more about vampire culture and politics.  The way Newman splits the chapters as short stories really helps with the pacing, overall readability and keeping all the characters organized in your head as you turn the page.  If you’re looking for blood-sucking vampire drama with a bit of action and humor, then start reading Johnny Alucard!
