Future Flicks: Pedro Almodóvar’s “I’m So Excited”

Is this a follow up to “Women on a Verge of a Nervous Breakdown?”Pedro Almodóvar & Blanca Suárez

Probably not, but Pedro Almodóvar is finishing up a new comedy with a twist! Whether it be dark, far-fetched, somewhat trivial, a situation that references Spanish culture, politics or everyday life, he just manages to bring out something fresh and creative in his films and in his actors. You don’t even have to understand the language, you just have to understand character: their layers of issues, their actions, and the circumstances that would inherently push them to react in a certain way in a given time, place and situation.

CAST: In the bottom right photo is: Javier Cámara, Lola Dueñas, Cecilia Roth, Antonio de la Torre and Carlos Areces. Standing, from left to right: José María Yazpik, Hugo Silva, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, José Luis Torrijo, Raúl Arevalo, Laya Martí and Willy Toledo

The English title “I’m So Excited” is a spin off from the 1980′s signature song of The Pointer Sisters, and they seemed to have used it in the film, or was it just for the current trailer tease? In Spanish, the film is actually titled “Los Amantes Pasajeros” which translates to “Passengers that fly together fall in love”. I can see how this can be exciting!

Another exciting part about this film is that this will be the very first time that Penélope Cruz and  Antonio Banderas will make an appearance together, along with Paz Vega.

The film is scheduled to be released March 15th, 2013.

A personal side note about Pedro Almodovar films 2

If you’ve watched many Almodóvar’s films, you come to realize most of them are interconnected by a minor or supporting character in a past film, because all of his characters have a backstory for a film to be made about. His films in a greater sense resemble the interconnected story telling of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, which is exemplified in one film in itself.

So if you’ve seen many of his films, I would have to say one of the exciting parts is catching a puzzle of detailed facts in a character in a new film, and having it all the sudden dawn on you, “Oh my god! – that’s the character from his fourth film that he made nine years ago, that’s the same character – this is his life!”, and that’s the biggest treat for me or for any fan. Pedro Almodóvar seems to give the audience more than they have already seen and definitely something to talk about, which is the life of his films.
