“There’s a charm to the dials and knobs of yesteryear’s imagination, the vacuum tubes and arcing electricity of the past’s futurism.” Foreword by Dave Gibbons
Kids today read everything on their tablets and smartphones, and sadly don’t remember the printed newspapers. I couldn’t wait for the Sunday paper, because they always had a section devoted to Sunday comic strips, like Prince Valiant and Calvin & Hobbes. Now Titan Books has just released the 3rd collected volume of the iconic sci-fi hero Flash Gordon.
The “Fall of Ming” collects Raymond’s comic strips from January 19, 1941 to August 13, 1944. The strips have been restored to full color glory and Flash Gordon begins his tumultuous fight Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo. In the real world, World War 2 was happening and even Flash Gordon was effected, as author/artist Alex Raymond created various parallels like Ming representing fascists dictators of its time.
Titan Books has done a splendid job of releasing this re-collected adventures of Flash Gordon with Forewards by Dave Gibbons and further insights about Alex Raymond by author Doug Murray. Again, Alex Raymond was ahead of its time if you look at his life-like film-style drawings. If you’re a sci-fi fan, a Flash Gordon fan or just love Sunday comic strips, then you should pick this up – Flash Gordon: The Fall of Ming – Volume 3.
