I read many novels, and you know it’s going to be some heavy reading when the first couple of pages start with a character listings, glossary and military definitions. Our story doesn’t kick-off until page 13! Virtues of War is the first in a trilogy of books by author Bennett R. Coles with the second novel Ghost of War available sometime in 2016 and the third novel March of War available sometime in 2017. Virtues of War follows Lieutenant Katja Emmes and her 10-trooper striker team on Rapier spacecraft.
A mix of Halo/Mass Effect military action, drama and politics all thrown-in is Virtues of War. In this 26th century, an uneasy “peace” between colonies (Sirius and Centauria) and Earth (Terran forces). The Centauri have been secretly building powerful advance robots for the coming rebellion. The 450 page plus book has many engaging characters like Sublieutenant Jack Mallory, Lieutenant Charity Brisebois and Lieutenant Commander Thomas Kane, but one of the main points of interest is Lt Katja Emmes. Her first as mission leader, she leads her strike team to investigate weapons smuggling in the Cerberan colony. The op falls apart as they fail to grab the Centauri spy or evidence of weapons smuggling. As we read on, the changing loyalties, human jealously, personal advancement and more epic action battles take place.
Virtues of War by author Bennett R. Coles has lots of military sci-fi action, intense space battles and use of military of tactics. You’ll find yourself rooting for Lt. Katja Emmes as you learn about her origins and her journey in Virtues of War.
