ALIEN: Seas of Sorrow by James A. Moore

aliensseasofsorrowThe ALIEN movie franchise has been a fan-favorite over the years and fans today still want more facehuggers!  20th Century FOX hopes to wet your appetite with 3 “official” novels based on the ALIEN and ALIENS films.  The first novel “Out of the Shadows” takes place at the end of first ALIEN movie and becomes the prequel to ALIENS.  Now, the stage is set for the second book by James A. Moore with ALIEN:  Sea of Sorrows.

The year is 2497, “Black Sand” is discovered on planet LV178 aka New Galveston and the Interstellar Commerce Commission (ICC) lead by Deputy Commissioner Alan Decker is on the scene.  The ICC is a governmental organization that provides rules and regulations for corporations terraforming planets for humans to live.  “Black Sand” aka Sea of Sorrows is a term used when a planet can’t be terraformed and somehow “Black Sand” has appeared on a build site.

As Alan Decker unravels the mystery, he discovers that this used to be a mining colony run by Kelland Mining.  Tough questions come to mind for Decker is how 3 major cities have been built on this planet without finding this “black sand” until now?  Is this a cover-up by the gigantic mega-corporation Weyland-Yutani?  At the dig site, a fight breakouts between workers and Decker is pushed into the “black sand.”  He panics and blacks out.  Decker finds himself shipped back Earth-side, to Chicago.  He tells his superiors that something fishy is going on and it all points to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.  Because of this, Decker gets shanghaied by mercs and on his way back to LV178.  Weyland-Yutani rep, Andrea Rollins explains to Decker why he is being kidnapped.  She tells him that his ancestor is Ellen Ripley and that he has empath powers that can detect “aliens.”  Upon arrival to the rock again, Decker learns that Weyland-Yutani has turned the “dig site” into a mining colony because of the Trimonite find and research facility since scientist have found an alien spaceship and alien city.  Like James Cameron’s epic ALIENS, all hell breaks loose as Decker and his team of mercenaries head down into mine.  Now it’s up to Alan Decker to destroy the Queen and her eggs.

As I read on and each page I turned, I can see this Sea of Sorrows novel like James Cameron’s ALIENS flick.  The aliens and facehuggers are intense as ever and the action is all out when the team hits the mine shaft with guns blazing like the Space Marines.  ALIEN fans always ask what is up with this Weyland-Yutani Corporation?  Well, we get answers like how the Weyland-Yutani got it’s start in terraforming planets and how it became the mega-corporation.  Author James A. Moore gets it right with this “official” original ALIEN story.
