Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – Official Movie Novelization

dotpotacoverYou don’t have to, but if you are the type of person that needs to read every tie-in to the main book and want to read things in order, then make sure you read Greg Keyes prequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm.  By the end of “Firestorm”, the “Simian Flu” has spread worldwide causing millions of deaths, civil unrest and economic meltdown around the world,  while Caesar leads all the apes to safety into Muir Woods.  Based on the screenplay by Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, author Alex Irvine pens the novelization Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The apes have created their own civilization in Muir Woods.  It is revealed that 10 years have passed and the “Simian Flu” has wiped-out most of the human population.  The human survivors in the San Francisco area are living in a fortified building in downtown lead by Dreyfus.  The colony is running out of electricity, and Malcolm’s plan is to re-open a dam generator in ape territory.  Malcolm makes contact with Caesar, but there is large “trust” issue between the apes and humans.  Caesar’s right-hand man Koba distrust all humans and plans to go to war with them.  Out of mistrust and miscommunication, the assassination of Caesar begins the war between the apes and humans.

The sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is all about Caesar!  Yes, there are the human characters involved, but this book is about the apes, their civilization and their relationships.  Unlike the film, which is very good and one of the best summer blockbusters and best sequels like ever, more can be explained in a book format.  A movie usually runs 2 hours long and there’s only so much you can build around the characters, so you will find more depth and background information about Caesar and his gang of apes like Koba.  They also take time explain the ape written and sign language.  So, if you enjoyed the movie at the multiplex and need a little more info and insight, you might want to pick-up Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – The Official Movie Novelization.
