Comic book creator Dave Elliot creates a new Alice in Wonderland universe and re-imagining of famous literary characters from the 19th century. Like ABC/Disney’s TV show Once Upon A Time, “The Weirding Willows” is where the worlds of Wonderland, Oz, Neverland, Olympus, Mars and Earth collide. This trade collects issues #1-6 of The Weirding Willows with bonus commentary and artwork.
A mysterious woman named Margareete Marche taps scientist Dr. Philippe Moreau to create animal soldiers. While Moreau’s daughter Alice has her hands full trying to stop Damon Frankenstein from destroying rabbit town with her talking rabbits. As Alice portal hops to different “worlds”, she discovers that Margareete Marche is really the Wicked Witch of the West and her devious plan must be stopped.
I remember reading a short strip of The Weirding Willows in the A1: The World’s Greatest Comics, Vol. 1 anthology trade and I’m glad now it gets a full comic book treatment. There maybe lots of talking animals and 19th Century literary characters involved, but it’s just fun reading how creator Dave Elliot maps and weaves together this new Alice in Wonderland universe. Plus, as always I enjoy the incredible anime/Western-style artwork by the team over at Stellar Labs. If you’re at your local comic book store today, you won’t be disappointed in picking up this trade. Now I have to just wait for Volume 2!
