One of the “Wonders of the World” is the Great Wall in China. Why was this gigantic wall built? It was to keep out evil monsters that appear every 60 years. This is the big budget East/West production by Legendary Pictures directed by award-winning Zhang Yimou. “The Great Wall” stars Matt Damon as the mercenary William Garin.

In search for fame and riches, mercenary William Garin and his men find themselves in remote China. His remaining men are tired and hungry after days of being hunted down by bandits in the region. As they rest for the night, they encounter a mysterious creature. William is able to fend off the beast by cutting its talon off. William and fellow survivor Pero Tovar stumble upon the amazing gigantic structure – the Great Wall.

If you ever read a Harlan Ellison, Anne McCaffrey or Larry Niven sci-fi book, usually the sci-fi art cover that catches your eye is drawn by artist Stephen Hickman. This full-color hardcover art book – “The Art of Stephen Hickman: Empyrean” is collection of Hickman’s amazing 40 years in fantasy sci-fi art.

“For me, fantasy imagery is simply my favorite place to work and live, and nature … Personal imagery, much of it inspired or informed by nature, is becoming more important to me the more painting I do, and fantasy is my direction of choice.” Stephen Hickman.

The Art of Fred Gambino: Dark Shepherd

Do you know who Fred Gambino is? I admit I don’t, but I’ve probably seen his work on book covers, video games and films. You will now know who he is with this Titan Books release – The Art of Fred Gambino: Dark Shepherd.

This is not a typical art book collection of personal works, it also includes Fred’s own personal passion project – his screenplay, concept art and snippet graphic novel intro to Dark Shepherd. Along with this, there are various paintings, illustrations, sketches, Photoshop images and book art covering Fred’s career with commentary.

Dragons: Dragon Down

Dragons, like vampires, werewolves and zombies are all the rage in movies, TV shows, books, comics and video games these days. Besides the dragons in HBO’s Games of Thrones, Dreamworks animated How to Train Your Dragon (2010) is also very popular. I was pleasantly surprised how good the first one was and now I’m just excited for the sequel – How to Train Your Dragon 2 being released on June 13, 2014. Titan Comics will be releasing graphic novels of all-new adventures based on the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

Well, if you ever find yourself in the fantasy section at the bookstore, most of those Ray Bradbury and HP Lovecraft book covers of wizards, monsters, castles and alien worlds were illustrated by Ian Miller.
