One of my favorite 1980s’ bands was the Pet Shop Boys and you might find it hard to believe they are still around making music. The Pet Shop Boys caught my attention again in 2013 with their single “Vocal” from the Electric album. A return to that 1980s and early 1990s sound that got me hooked, and now here in 2016 – the Pet Shop Boys are back with their latest single “Pop Kids.”
If you ever wonder what type of dance music is trending around the globe? Well this program World DJ Sessions takes you there. A collaboration between UK magazine Mixmag and tequila maker Olmeca will bring 8 mega dance events featuring the top DJ’s locally.

One of the great yearly weekend music festivals these past few years takes place in Belgium – the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Festival known as Tomorrowland. Now dance fans and comic book aficionados come together in this genre mixing story Tomorrowland from writer Paul Jenkins (Wolverine: Orgin). Originally printed as a 4-issue mini-series this past summer 2013 by Titan Comics, now we get the whole saga in one volume in this hardbound trade – Tomorrowland. It’s like Glastonbury getting its own graphic novel! Tomorrowland follows DJs Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike on their DJ gigs as they battle evil from other dimensions on this cosmic/portal opening/spiritual/metaphysical journey to save Earth! It’s kind of like the anime The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Macross Frontier (or Macross Plus, or just whatever Macross incarnation/reboot you prefer) as the heroine uses her singing prowess to stop war and save the universe.

Retrenders visited Ensambles Ballet Folklórico de San Francisco to catch a glimpse into the intense planning and preparation that took place months ago for the upcoming 20th anniversary show, “Las Pinturas de Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo en Movimiento” (The paintings of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Movement).
Ensambles, a premier Mexican folk dance company in San Francisco, has been presenting the art, dance and culture of Mexico on stages and venues in the Bay Area and abroad throughout the last 20 years.
The company, led by artistic visionary, Zenón Barron, will be presenting its capstone performances at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco and at the Spreckels Performing Arts Center in Rohnert Park.
The cast of Ensambles is over 35 dancers strong, with training in multiple dance disciplines. The special presentation will bring together the dance company and three of the Bay Area’s finest traditional musical groups: Vinic-Kay (La Gente y el Canto), Cascada de Flores and Los Compas.

Host, Retrenders Spotlight
“Don’t Go” featured a catchy, melodic and synthesized tune for the British New Wave band, Yazoo. It was released in May 1982 as the second single from their debut album, Upstairs at Eric’s.

Check out this clip of Steve Aoki – he’s one heck of a talented guy who’s got some very interesting things to say about music and spirituality. Of course the music in the background is thumping and clips from his shows just permeate with excitement and energy, but you can tell that this guy loves his job.

These are works from Dutch artist Sabi Van Hemert. She incorporates animal and child-likeness into movement. The sculpture works remind me of Marvel’s Spider-Man in action poses.

Kriss Kross was another product of ‘Hotlanta’ music mastermind, Jermaine Dupri, in 1990.
Sometimes it’s good to revert to the basics…simple and funky. And, this Friday, it’s about keeping both. Simple costuming, simplistic concepts, and basic, funky beats characterized the band, Devo!

Whenever the subject of good music comes up – I think of Kaskade. He’s the hottest DJ/Remixer/Producer on the planet right now. I love his big stadium sounds – he knows to how get people onto the dancefloor. Kaskade was recently on BBC Radio1’s Essential Mix program and he did an amazing 2 hour set.
