Why a BLADE RUNNER sequel?

The 1982 film was absolutely on point for it’s science fiction noir story taking place in 2019, because we still have neon lights and newspapers! Bladerunner - RetrendersDirected by Ridley Scott , Bladerunner accomplished its look with a raw and real-life edge of art direction and special effects  that we see influencing today’s futuristic films; the modern caper wardrobe intermingled with stylized space-tech outfits depending on the defined identity of the character – to the atmosphere of space age flying vehicles through a sky rise metropolis contrasting the ground level of real city life eclecticism of street cyclist, people walking with umbrellas, to grime that exists in rainwater running down a gutter in a dark alley street. There was no superficiality, but dark romanticism to this futuristic film which made it a cult noir classic.

Interview with Anno Dracula author Kim Newman

annodraculajohnnyThe fan favorite vampire series Anno Dracula returns!  Author Kim Newman recently released his latest Anno Dracula novel – Johnny Alucard that takes place from 1976-1991.  Retrenders interviews author Kim Newman about his new book – Johnny Alucard and what the future holds for this popular Dracula series.

+++++++++++

RTNDR:  The universe of Anno Dracula and the characters you’ve created is very popular and many fans enjoy this series, so with this new book Johnny Alcuard, did you set out thinking, “Well, the fans might enjoy it if this character or that character goes through this plotline or this journey” or did you already have your own ideas and had everything mapped out?

KIM:  I plot books – and, in this case, series  – by a method known as ‘feeling your way in the dark’. I usually know where I’m going with a story but not the exact route I’ll get there.  I hope readers enjoy where I take the characters (and them) but tend to think of what the story needs rather than what people want – indeed, sometimes you have to go against expectations or wishes.  In this case, the book was written piecemeal over decades – the first chunk of it was done before the third novel in the series – and I always knew the spine was where a particular character went, though the details were developed during the composition and I think I surprised myself.

G.I. Joe: Team Ninja

gijoe blind masterHasbro’s G.I. Joe toy line has had some famous real-life characters join the team, like WWF wrestler Sgt. Slaughter and NFL Chicago Bear lineman William “The Fridge” Perry, and now, you can add Wu-Tang Clan member RZA to the list.  Maybe it was just me, I found it hilarious that RZA was playing the Blind Master in G.I. Joe:  Retaliation.  I was cracking up and enjoyed the stiff dialogue he had in the movie.  What I liked about the movie was all the ninja stuff which hearkens back to Larry Hama’s old Marvel Comics G.I. Joe universe.

The Art of a Video Store

levideo

Most of us have probably moved on from stepping into a video store to using Netflix by mail if not by digital cable at the push of a menu button, but the truth be told is that we lose a great deal of social interaction, adventure and discovery about films  first hand, because where else could you find unusual categories, collections, to even never before seen films that went nowhere but into a video store that exists for the interest of a cinephile, and of course operated by people who love the art of cinema and have made the video store their business to provide that missing, if not, hard to find film you’ve been searching for.

Tarzan Celebrates 100 Years!!!

Today we celebrate 100 years of Tarzan, the man-child raised by apes in the jungles of Africa, born from the imaginary mind of author Edgar Rice Burroughs who created the popular fictional character that first leaped onto printed pages in 1912.

When I received a review copy of Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration in the mail, I was really stunned at how beautiful this hardbound book was.  Author and Tarzan fanatic Scott Tracy Griffin went all out – this book is a comprehensive collection of all things Tarzan and Edgar Rice Burroughs.  First of all, this book has an awesome collection of illustrations, book art, comic book art, cover art, and archive photos from the various movies and television shows.  It also covers various aspects of the Tarzan universe, such as, merchandising, toys, fan clubs, fan conventions, and it even includes a dictionary on what is known as “ape” language.  I can speak ape now!
