Almost all speakers out there under $1,000 USD are just dull black veneer wrapped around MDF speakers. Now don’t get me wrong, some of them sound great but when the music stops, they just look like the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Recently, I stumbled upon these speakers and these seem to add a pretty nice second dimension to your speaker. It’s as if you can enjoy it with the music on or off.
Artist Inspired Eco-Friendly Speakers
Japan: FitEar ToGo 334
I attend the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas every year (I hope to bring back some great pics for Retrenders at next years show) and I have heard my share of amazing audiophile-quality headphones. Most of the high end $500+ headphones are over-the-head styles and I don’t remember ever seeing or hearing a pair of in-ear headphone in that price range. That’s why I was really drawn to Cnet’s “Best In-Ear Headphone” claim.
More Umbrella Art
Simply beautiful. There really should be more of these simple but yet beautiful art pieces that decorate our city. Why must we always have modern art that push boundaries, but yet, no one can understand them or find it at least semi-pleasing? While this art installation might not cause controversy or lead art into new territories, I would really enjoy seeing this on my way to work everyday. It just brings a smile to my face.
Muji Coming to San Francisco
Muji is finally coming to San Francisco. The Japanese retail giant that specializes in consumer and household goods announced plans to open a SF store in November at 540 Ninth St. in the SOMA district. It will be the Muji’s first West Coast outlet and fifth store in the US. Also, it will be the largest in the US with 7,250 square feet of retail space and parking. Be the first in line but, in the meantime, get ready with what you want by checking out their website. (http://www.muji.us/)
Umbrellas in the Sky!
These bright and colorful umbrellas light up the skies in a town called Águeda, Portugal. No one knows who to credit this art project but photographer Patricia Almeida took some amazing pics.

A Flower in the Sky
I stumbled onto these beautiful photos a long while ago. I really like the mood of the photos – it’s as if you’re in a dream state of distant memories. I wished someday the artist would pair these photos up with music. In the meantime, I’ll look through the photos with some quiet jazz, slow guitar, etc.
Man Bag: J. Crew Abingdon
A messenger bag is pretty much a part of me as I commute to work everyday. All around on the bus, I see all the men carrying a similar bag because, these days, we just have a lot to lug around. I’ve got today’s lunch, my sweater, ipod, cell phone, keys, reading materials, etc. To be honest, I feel naked without my bag and I’m pretty rough with it, that’s why I’m always on the lookout for new bags or newer styles. Guess where I found this beautiful messenger bag – PurseBlog.com, which is my wife’s quick link to her purse addiction. Ughh, that’s when I realized that the messenger bag is the modern man’s purse but, darnit, that’s one good looking bag and the price is awesome. I want one…

LEGO London 2012 Olympic Stadium
LEGO brick master Warren Elsmore spent a lot of time and money on this custom build. This is an amazing mini-replica of Stratford Olympic Park. This was a team effort though, Warren’s wife also got involved in building this LEGO wonderland. He and his wife spent over 300 hours constructing it, used over 250,000 LEGO bricks, and spent around $30,000USD. Wow.

Virgin America x Banana Republic = Flight Crew Apparel
Today, Virgin America celebrates its fifth anniversary of operating in the States and they’ll be launching a cool collaboration with Banana Republic. Virgin America’s 2000 employees will be wearing brand new outfits designed by Banana Republic. Though, because of security issues, the collection you will be buying from Banana Republic won’t be exactly the same outfits as the Virgin America employees, but it’s close enough.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi LEGO Chess Set
There is just no way on earth I can concentrate on chess when I have a set like this. I would constantly add-on to each piece or re-enact scenes from the Star Wars movies. Before you know it, I’ve busted out the rest of my Lego Star Wars sets and any semblance of a chess game would have been gone a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away….).
The Sushi Bazooka
I am a high volume sushi-eater at home. My wife just can’t keep up with the wrapping while I wolf down the sushi. Now with this gadget, I might have just met my match. Just simply open the device, put in the rice, fish, etc, and then shoot it out like a caulk gun. Heck, maybe this weekend, I can just put to use my caulk gun from Home Depot before this comes through the mail from Japan.
T-Shirt Design: The Black Knight Rises
This mash-up needs to be a graphic tee! Oh wait, it is!
This is “The Black Knight Rises” by Nathan Davis aka obvian who hails from Melbourne, Australia. It puts the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail into one of this summer’s most recognizable movie posters. The result is a pretty bad-ass drawing.
Sherlock Holmes – The Army of Dr. Moreau
Gruesome murders have been found around the city of London. Sherlock Holmes’ brother Mycroft, a government agent, tells him of the grizzly findings and a scientist named Dr. Moreau that might be behind this. This time, Sherlock and Dr. Watson will be off on a Resident Evil-style horror/adventure as they face a mad scientist creating half animal and half human species.
The Twenty-Year Death by Ariel S. Winter
If you like sexy women, French accents, booze, cigarettes, and murders to solve, you will want to read Ariel S. Winters debut crime novel – “The Twenty-Year Death.” The crime tale begins with a dead body on the streets of a small French town. What unravels are three complete stories that are interconnected – making one epic narrative. The first story – “Malvineau Prison” takes place in France in 1931; Book 2 – “The Falling Star” takes place in 1941 and involves a private detective keeping an eye on a studio’s leading lady in Hollywood; and the final Book – “Police at the Funeral” happens in 1951 and tells the tale of one man’s last chance at redemption.
This is a great debut novel by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the different writing styles in each book. If you are not in the mood for summer blockbuster flicks at the theater or sitting at home playing with your iPad, may I suggest some page turning thrills with “The Twenty-Year Death.”

Interview with The Twenty-Year Death Author Ariel S. Winter
Next week on August 7th 2012, Titan Books will be releasing Ariel S. Winter’s debut crime noir novel “The Twenty-Year Death.” Our Retrenders staff had a chance to interview Mr. Winter and talk a little about the book, his influences, and more:
+++++++++++++
RTNDR: How did you come up with the idea to start The Twenty-Year Death? What inspired you to write not just one story but three complete novels written in the style of three different iconic mystery writers?
Ariel: I originally set out to write a different book. It was going to have a frame narrative, and within that frame would have been full novels of various genres. So it was in that context that I wrote Malniveau Prison in the style of Georges Simenon. When I decided to jettison the original idea but keep Malniveau Prison and expand it into what became The Twenty-Year Death, it only made sense to continue with other pastiche/homages. The character that I was going to follow from book to book was an American writer living in France in the 1930s, and so many of the writers who did that in real life, like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, ended up writing for Hollywood at some point. And Hollywood led naturally to Raymond Chandler in the 1940s. So with ten years between the first two books I figured there should be another ten years between book two and book three, and the list of choices of master crime writers from the 1950s was basically Jim Thompson and Patricia Highsmith. At the time, I’d read more Thompson and his style fit better for the subject of the book.
