The 411 on Mirrorless DSLR (MILC)

If you had recently stopped by your local electronics store, you may have seen more advertising pushed on a new type of digital camera class – the mirrorless DSLR.  These cameras look like digital point and shoots (POS) but they have the ability to change lenses.

Mirrorless Interchangeable-Lens Camera (MILC)

Mirrorless Interchangeable-lens cameras (MILC) are just that – they are cameras without the mirrors.  MILC cameras use electronic viewfinders, which is just the rear LCD screen, to look at your subject.  Moreover,  some have no viewfinders at all.  Because of this, MILCs can be smaller and lighter, similar to POS digital cameras.

Mirrorless DSLRs use interchangeable lens just like the DSLR’s do.  Now you have the option to use regular pancake lenses, wide-angle lenses, and telephoto lenses, unlike digital POS cameras where the lenses are fixed with limited zooming and focusing capabilities.

Future Flicks: Zorro Reborn

Gael García Bernal is attached to the new film Zorro Reborn as Zorro!

Since the independent hit film, Y Tu Mama Tambien, he has taken on some of the most fascinating character roles in films like: Walter Salles’s Motorcycle Diaries, Pedro Almodóvar’s Bad Education, and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel. He is considered as one of today’s most well known and talented actors from Mexico… and without a doubt, he can play Zorro!

The history of Zorro on the silver screen dates back to 1920 with the original The Mark of Zorro, played by Douglas Fairbanks. Since then there has been a number of Zorro adventures and remakes, and even a television series done by Disney with Guy Williams as the masked man from 1957 to 1959. And this is just in American films! Zorro has also been featured in Mexican and European films since the 1920s.

Though I have marked Gael García Bernal as part of the cast of Zorro Reborn, things may change due to the nature of Hollywood’s business handling in production timing, finances, the movie’s popularity sway for another masked hero in theaters, or even a change in the actor’s availability for the project.

The Zorro Reborn script is ready and production should begin in 2013 once 20th Century Fox picks up a director to set things in motion.

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” By Stephen Chbosky

Stephen Chbosky’s inspiration in writing this story came from one his own favorite books, The Catcher in the Rye. Most of us that have attended a public school in the U.S. must have read, or at least, has heard about J.D. Salinger’s most famous work of literature. The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows loyally to the coming-of-age storyline from the point of view of Charlie, an awkward but intelligent freshman in high school, trying hard to grow up and fit in. He meets two friends, Sam and Patrick, who help him find his place in high school. Charlie decides to write to an anonymous friend to detail the important events in his life. His writing is hilarious, sad, hopeful, and he impels us to think about why we choose the choices we make everyday. The book also deals with drugs, sex, homosexuality, dysfunctional families,  and all the other challenges life throws at us along the way. Charlie teaches us that life is a struggle but it’s also worth living every minute.

Throw a Curveball Better than Barry Zito

When I was a kid I dreamed about playing Major League Baseball, but the farthest I had achieved in getting to that goal was sitting on the bench in my high school JV team.  Now, that dream is being reignited with this magical plastic baseball – the Blitzball from College Hill Games.

This baseball will make you look like a stud pitcher.  The ball is aerodynamically shaped with 72 hex shapes which helps the ball rotate in the air.

MSRP:  $11.99 for 4 Blitzballs.

Smooth, Supple and … FAST!!

O.K….so the sleeper hit Drive has recently influenced my being.  I got it.  But, really…who doesn’t want to look cool in a T-shirt, jeans and grease?…and drive fast?

Ryan Gosling’s character, the Driver, exudes the ultimate cool: stoic, manly and kick-ass.  All while wearing a particularly fashionable pair of Gaspar driving gloves, created by Dorothy Gaspar of Hollywood glove-designing fame.

The Modern Mix-Tape … Totally 80s-inspired!

If you’re looking for a little retro activity in your modern life, try the ol’ school (albeit, with new school equipment!) mix-tape/CD!

I have never been a stranger to music…especially that which is inspired by that beloved era!  So, I recently started grouping different tracks on good ol’ iTunes and cranking out some serious mixes (Soul Sounds, Passion Plays, Calming Classical)…and, now, Electronic Drive!

After viewing the sleek, sexy, soon-to-be-cult-classic, Drive, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, I felt compelled to revert to my music-compiling days….totally 80s-inspired-like!

Sandrine Estrade Boulet

It’s always nice to see an artist that can take the mundane part of life, something that we normally ignore, and turn it into something pretty, interesting, and funny. That’s what French artist Sandrine Estrade Boulet did.

I liked the way she described this in her own words, “To create a sensitive work that is fun, positive and totally disinhibited. Imagine spontaneous images than can make people feel good, putting a smile on their face: this is what really motivates me and amuses me.”

Sometimes an artists’ empty canvas can be difficult to start with, but to be able to take a mundane subject and turn it into a feel good art piece, that’s a very special talent.
