After 17 months of hiatus, Mad Men came back and nestled deep back into a specially reserved space back into my heart. Even within the first five minutes of the premiere, my stomach fluttered in such a way that only happens when you reunite with long lost good friends. Okay, maybe that is an exaggeration or maybe I just need to get out more, but it certainly felt that way. During the gap between last season and the premiere, the lives of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce churned away and upon our meeting again, we have caught up with one another on how we’ve been.
Spoilers ahead!

I just watched the Hunger Games movie today and I have to say it was spectacular. Gary Ross did a phenomenal job directing this story of strong emotion to a movie of actors and actresses with equally strong emotion. You see deeper meanings in tiny glimpses of the characters’ minds that go beyond senseless violence and action like in many other movies. It was a very well done film. A very fast paced, heart pounding film that was faithful to Suzanne Collin’s work.
What also makes a movie is the soundtrack. We were so excited and bought the CD in the deluxe edition at Target for $11.99. All we can say about the soundtrack was that it was not quite worth $12 and there was nothing too deluxe about it. The whole soundtrack was very morose and somber, with themes of darkness, perseverance, and hope which are all part of the theme of the “Hunger Games”. The songs are great to listen to if it accompanies the movies, but not so riveting when listening to it on its own.
These students are jamming A-ha’s classic “Take On Me” with their accordions. Surprisingly, these music students are from the Kum Song school in North Korea and, as you know, North Korea is known for other things.

A friend of mine was recently in Hong Kong for vacation and stopped over @ the Uniqlo store and got me this fresh collab tee by Uniqlo and Marvel Comics. The tee is of course %100 cotton and reprints classic comic covers from Marvel comics. Remember when comics were .40 cents! In my day it was .75 cents and I’m really dating myself here. But if you are in Asia – make sure you stop by the Uniqlo stores for these cool collab tees.

With vibrant colors against fabrics of earthy tones, the fashion designer Emanuela Corvo has brought the art of Frida Kahlo’s everyday clothing into this year’s spring fashion. Frida Kahlo, an iconic painter from Mexico in the 20th century, was inspired by the colors and textiles of indigenous Mexican culture with the fusion of European influences for her clothing. Her choice of what she wore and how she wore her dresses reflected the specific folk culture of Mexico in its time, and not to mention, her choice of personal style.

The quality of pop songs in America has gone down in the years, with the younger generation enjoying more music about clubbing, drinking, and having multiple lovers. Wouter “Wally” De Backer, a Belgian-Australian musician addresses this downward trend in an interview. Clubbing songs are nice and fun but it can get tiring and played out. Artists that sing and write about partying and drinking, dominate the charts and rule over the radio waves with listeners brainwashed into believing what their definition of life is. Gotye and Kimbra’s song “Somebody that I Used to Know ft Kimbra” written by Gotye, peaked at #1 in Australia for eight weeks straight and ranked amongst the top 5 in U.S Billboard Hot 100. Their song speaks loudly and differently from mainstream, overplayed pop songs of the recent years. Singing about the complexities of regret, sadness, and longing after a relationship has ended, it is a clear reminder of what many songs lack these days.
Here is a video of their song “Somebody I Used to Know”

Everybody should backpack through Europe once in their lifetime. Not only will you have an amazing adventure but you will also end up meeting different kinds of people from all walks of life. Well, the hostels can be a hit or miss, but you can use Yelp to find the best hostels for your stay. I have to say, besides the clubs, the food, the shops, the tourist spots, and the gazillion churches to visit, I also enjoyed just sitting at a café writing and drawing in my journal. It was cool jotting ideas and other random thoughts arising from my head while watching the world around me. Picture a cozy outdoor café in the South of France overlooking the sea while you are sipping on a cup of coffee.
An editor over @ Everythingisterrible.com must have had a lot of time on his hands because he ended up cutting this 1975 Superman TV musical into 3 minutes of terrible fun. It’s so bad that’s it’s actually funny to watch. Maybe a Smallville musical?

I like technology and I enjoy collecting toys, but what I like more is art that says something to our hearts and minds. My friend Johnny Moreno creates these incredible paintings on canvas celebrating the rich Latino history and culture. And with Wondercon approaching this month, we should try to hit up Artist Alley and support our indie artists.
Again – “stay cool.”
