What makes a great “Brick and Mortar” store? Of course the brand, cool products, location and customer service, but also style and creating a cool atmosphere like Apple stores. Lightning Returns is the third and final installment to the Final Fantasy XIII games. I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan, owning all numbered games, so of course I was going to get this game even if the previous one, Final Fantasy XIII-2, wasn’t that good. The first thing you’ll notice when playing is that the battle system has changed from the last two Final Fantasy XIII games – no longer do you have three characters in your party and the fighting goes away from the traditional Active Time Battle system. This did remind me a lot of another game, Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, however it’s not as fun. In Lightning Returns, you can move around while fighting, but it’s a slow walk; while in Crisis Core, you ran when you moved around enemies. Then there’s this interesting twist about having thirteen in-game days to beat this game, which reminded me a lot of Majora’s Mask. In actuality, you only have six days to complete the game, but by finishing countless side quests along the way, one can push it to thirteen. That’s fine, but time flies really fast in this game and some of these side quests just takes too long to be worth it. Most of your time will be spent running back and forth to do mundane tasks, such as getting flowers for someone, waiting for certain drops from monsters, or even eating at six different restaurants. I usually run through the main quests and when I stumble upon somebody giving out a side quest, also if I have time to spare, I’ll accept the quest. So far it’s worked out for me – I’ve still got a good few number of days to spare to complete the game. I’m not rushing to get through this though and neither should anybody else who plays it. The ReAction Alien toys were a hit last year by Super 7 and Funko. Now this year, they will follow-up with more incredible film licenses, like “Back to the Future”, “Halloween”, “Friday the 13th”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Firefly”, “Pulp Fiction”, “Terminator”, “The Rocketeer”, and more for 2014. So, if you grew up in the 70s and 80s, these ReAction action figures may take you back to those Kenner-style action figures. I just know that I will be buying many of these figures, so just take my wallet already!
On this side of the pond, we get lots of War World II stories from the press and Hollywood, but not much from the British POV. Comic book writer Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hitman) with Titan Books gathers an incredible collection of World War II comic book stories from the British perspective. “Battle” was published weekly from 1975 to 1988 and left a mark in British comic book history and gave comic book talents like John Wagner, Mike Western, Cam Kennedy, John Cooper, Alan Hebden and David Hunt freedom to tell honest life and death tales from World War II.

“… I believe HMS Nightshade to be its writer’s most important work: it is about something that counts. It is not about fantasy of future lawmen, interplanetary bounty-hunters, or assassins in a game of murder.” Garth Ennis, Garth Ennis Presents Battle Classics

One of my favorite trilogies is the Indiana Jones franchise starring Harrison Ford as Indy the hero treasure hunter. Here’s a way cool playset, well a large-scale Indiana Jones diorama.
After 30 years, the wait is finally over, the French sci-fi graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette has now been translated into English. Inspired by reading the graphic novel, Korean director Bong Joon-Ho turned it into the film Snowpiercer which stars Chris Evans, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris. Snowpiercer Vol. 1 – The Escape takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth where the entire planet has been covered in ice and the only human survivors are left are on a train that runs forever.
Hayao Miyazaki is a living icon, his animated films have brought fun, joy and tears and now a cute tribute statue is available.
One of the most looked forward to Indie Game for 2014 is The Witness, created by Jonathan Blow, who also created the popular game, Braid, a game based on the simplicity, the innocence and the motivation of an teen-adult life in the magical realm of forces and struggles. Hence, life isn’t simple, but it’s attainable when you search and struggle for it. Jonathan rendered the nature of life in Braid , but what to expect from The Witness and what will it’s theme really mean overall – we hope to find out soon from players, reviewers and the creator himself. Here’s a snippet interview from Game Life WIRED

As with any art like the classics of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci to Mexican mural artists such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, we can see the glorification of humanity in all its elements of beauty, love, chaos, destruction and yes, even the propaganda – that art leaves you to think and feel your own thoughts of what is the meaning of this?

One cool action figure or robot I should say to get this year is the limited run Robocop ED-209 by NECA. This action figure is from the original Robocop 1987 film. We ’80s kids should remember this kick-ass flick.
My first trade I get to read this year is Numbercruncher from Titan Comics writer Si Spurrier (X-Men Legacy) and artist PJ Holden (Judge Dredd). Numbercruncher was released as a 4-issue mini-series last year and now it’s all collected into one volume. This is not your typical mainstream superhero comic like Batman or Spiderman, Numbercruncher is life-after-death, love, something spiritual and comedy of sorts all wrap-up in one, well kind of.

If you remember the long-running sci-fi TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation? Patrick Stewart was awesome as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Star Trek Select kick-offs the New Year with this new 7″ action figure. The figure has some articulation for pose-ability and a detail dead Borg-base stand.
What makes a movie or TV show great? Yes, the acting and cast are among the very important aspects, but like movie reviewer Grace Randolph says “World Building” is also a vital part. Here ILM takes us behind-the-scenes of how they built a “real” futuristic 2259 San Francisco for Star Trek Into Darkness.
