The Cocktail Waitress by James M. Cain

In The Cocktail Waitress our protagonist is Joan Medford, a beautiful young mother who recently became a widow after her abusive husband got into a deadly car accident.  She takes a job as a waitress in a seedy local cocktail lounge to make ends meet and to take care of her young son.   At the Rose Garden Lounge is where she meets two men that will change her life – a rich, old man, Earl K White III, and a good-looking charmer named Tom Barclay.  As Joan’s relationship evolves with these two men – danger and drama unfold.  As the reader, you will decide if Joan Medford is a femme fatale or an innocent bystander that’s always at the wrong place at the wrong time.

8-Bit “Never Gonna Give You Up”

So last week we gave you a Mad Men version of the Rick Astley…dare I say “classic?” If that tickled your fancy and are always on the look out for different versions of that heart-swooning song, may I present an 8 bit version?

Don’t pretend you didn’t like it.

Iconic Movie Posters with a Cartoon Twist

Canadian illustrator Ïve Bastrash reimagined these iconic posters with his own fresh cartoon style and, in my opinion, some look better than the original. A movie lover and a video game artist, Ïve also designs playing cards featuring Jack Nicholson, Cher, and Sonny Bono as the Jack, Queen, and King cards of a poker deck respectively.

Here’s a few more of my favs:

Soundtype Track 1 – Tunogo’s Remix of After The Fall’s “Don’t Feel”

We’re starting a new weekly blog series here on Retrenders called Soundtype where I’ll cover emerging artists or indie music that have recently hit my playlist. New music is an obsession of mine – just listening to new tracks takes up most of my day –  so it just made sense to write about and share with our audience which song or artist stood out that week.

Let’s start off the series with a remix from Tunogo, an LA based electronic music act helmed by Bass/EDM producer Jess Labb. She put together a nice dubstep/downtempo mix of After The Fall’s new single “Don’t Feel.” Here’s the track – After The Fall – Don’t Feel (Tunogo’s Benumb Remix):

If you like this, you can download the track for free (while it’s still available) or check out other tracks and EP’s by Tunogo on her Soundcloud page. Jess Labb is currently working on a follow up to the Intemperatus EP out on Sodio Recordings and you can find more info on Tunogo on their site – Tunogo.com

After The Fall (also hailing from Los Angeles) is releasing the “Don’t Feel” single later this month on September 25, and it includes this mix plus three others – here’s the teaser link for all the upcoming tracks.

Next week, I’ll highlight two recent remixes that just happen to share the same song title thus confusing me to no end as to which group sang what. See ya then!

Rick Astley x Mad Men = Never Gonna Give You Up

Rick Astley’s 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” will never go away!  The cast of Mad Men, with footage taken from season 1-4, speak-sing the song.  This mash-up editing is really good.

A Guide to Games of Thrones – Season 1

Are you a fan of HBO’s Games of Thrones?  Are you confused with the many characters, alliances, and what not? Well use this:

The Games of Thrones Visual Guide to the Faces of Season 1.

All they need now is to make a guide for Season 2 and 3.  This would be plenty helpful since there’s so many characters involved – not that I’m complaining.

Dinosaur Art – The World’s Greatest Paleoart

As kids growing up, didn’t we all love dinosaurs?  We learned about dinosaurs in school and at the museums.  For me I think it was the Transformers’ Dinobots and Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park that really got me into dinosaurs.  I always thought art & science were separate worlds, but they are interwoven here with one another – Dinosaur Art.  Paleo-artists take fossils from extinct species and bring them back to life in the form of drawings, paintings, and digital mediums, like CGI and Photoshop.

Question: Is This a Drawing or a Photograph?

Redhead Girl via Viana Arts

The answer please.  Is this your final answer!  Well, it’s actually not a photograh, but a drawing of a girl using only Bic color ballpoint pens!  Amazing.  Artist Samuel Silva took inspiration from a photo by Russian photographer Kristina Tararina.  He took around 30 hours to draw this and used 8 different colored Bic ballpoint pens (what a great ad plug for Bic!).

To check Samuel’s quick Q&A and more images of his artwork, go to: Deviant Art – Viana Arts.

In China: Robot Chefs making Noodles

Whoa, here’s a paradigm shift in China, robot chefs making hand-made noodles in restaurants.  It seems that human chefs take a longer time making noodles and cost more in wages, so restaurateur Cui Runguan decided to build noodle-bots.  The noodle-bots named Chef Cui cost about $2,000USD each.

We fight Deceptions and make an awesome bowl of wonton noodles!!!

Make Music with Incredibox

I found a new timesuck. Incredibox is an amazing website where you can create your own music by selecting various melodies, beats, effects, and choruses together to create a unique and distinct musical piece of your own. The best aspect of the application is that you can visually see all your additions at work by dragging and dropping various icons representing each desired effect onto the avatar. You can then record and share your creation with your friends and see among which of you is the most musically inclined.

Jay Tsujimura: DSLR Bling Bling Jewlery

bI’m all for adorning myself with certain blings. Bling for my fingers and neck is a must – though the verdict is still out on bling for my teeth and other unmentionable body parts. What about bling for the camera? I love my camera but it never occurred to me to adorn it with jewelry. I have to give these guys creative points for going where no one has ever thought of. The designs are very masculine and definitely wouldn’t mind having them as rings or necklaces.

The History of the Batmobile

Image via Jay Mug.

Now that is a garage I would love to walk into – five of the most iconic Batmobiles all in one place. My favorite has always been Michael Keaton’s ride in Tim Burton’s Batman. The curves on that car blended perfectly with the gothic theme throughout the movie. Looking at it now, it still holds up. The other two Batmobiles afterwards were kind of cheesy, until Christopher Nolan’s Tumbler came along with its industrial stylings, and tore up the blueprint.
