Once we arrived at Comikaze Expo we were christened by the powers of great opportunities and got an interview with Stan Lee! He’s a pretty busy guy these days, especially when everyone at Comikaze Expo wants to meet him…but who wouldn’t want to meet the man that gave birth to the pop culture of comics. With this great opportunity, our one and only “The Eddie” got to ask Stan Lee a couple of personal questions about the man and his comics.
In my generation, my comic book idols weren’t just the superheroes on the printed pages, but the artists who drew them. And as an amateur wannabe artist, I tried drawing like Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri and Todd McFarlane. As you can see below, I’m not a very good artist.
If you want to learn how to draw, like everybody, you have to learn the basics. One of those legendary art teachers in American history is Andrew Loomis. He published several drawing books in 1930s-1940s that influenced many artists of today. Thanks to Titan Books who have been republishing many of Andrew Loomis’ drawing books like this one, “I’d Love to Draw!”
Artist Frank Kozik’s creation, the Labbit creature has found itself onto DC Comics Universe. In this DC Collection, there are six 2.5″ figures to collect which inlcude: Batman, Superman, Red Hood, Green Lantern, Cyborg and Bane. Each of these DC Labbits have super detailed paint jobs and one neat accessory unique to that DC character.
The man behind the 1980s’s Marvel G.I. Joe comic book run – Larry Hama. This is Spitting Image’s docu-film profile on the iconic comic book writer/artist Larry Hama.
I had a blast reading author Samit Basu’s critically-acclaimed 2012 Turbulence novel awhile back, and it got me hungry for his second serving, the sequel – Resistance. Eleven years have passed, since the flight of BA142 from London to Delhi gave passengers on the plane incredible powers. This was known as the First Wave, the age of the super power humans. It is now 2020 and the world has changed with many super human beings. This Second Wave, humans with no powers serve the ruling super power elites.
When I started out with comics all I cared about was the artist drawing the issue like the Jim Lee’s and Marc Silvestri’s of the world, and I could care less about the writers, inkers or colorists. But as I developed my comic book knowledge, I began to learn about writers, inkers and colorists I liked too. Our Ramen host Ramon Angel got back into comics not just because the art, but the inking by Matt Banning aka BATT on his Green Lantern runs.
Over the years reading comics, you begin to find writers you like to read from, and one of them for me is Greg Rucka. I really enjoyed his Oni Press comics Whiteout and Queen & Country and Greg’s various Batman runs over at DC Comics. Our Ramen host Eddie Ballar interviews Greg Rucka at Big Wow! ComicFest.
This past weekend at the San Jose Convention Center, Big Wow! ComicFest took place for comic book fans and cosplayers. The Ramen & a Half team of Eddie and Ramon recall their highlights of this 2-day comic book festival.
I’m still recovering from this past weekend’s Big Wow! ComicFest convention at the San Jose Convention Center. The Ramen and a Half guys went hunting for autographs, but also grab interviews with artists, cosplayers and fans.
This upcoming weekend here in the SF/Bay Area is one cool geek-fest – the Big Wow! ComicFest. The two-day convention kicks-off May 17-18, 2014 weekend at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, CA. Unlike other comic-book conventions I won’t name that have gone super Hollywood, Big Wow! remains the same as the headliner is all about comic books, the artists and writers in the industry. Many notable artists will be there like Frank Cho, Neal Adams, Mike Mignola, Greg Rucka, just to name a few.
It’s safe to say Retrenders will be at Big Wow! ComicFest! Our Ramen & A Half team Eddie Ballar and Ramon Angel will grab interviews and highlights from the event. Look for our videos on the Retrenders YouTube channel.
Here our some of our videos we did last year from Big Wow! ComicFest 2013:
In today’s comic book shops and bookstores, it’s mostly superhero comics that dominate the shelves and racks. It wasn’t like that during the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s of this bygone era where comic book creators branched into many genres like romance, westerns and science fiction. Comic book legends Joe Simon and Jack Kirby are more known for their superhero work, but they also took the comic book medium to other genres and Titan Books publishes another neat collection from The Simon & Kirby Library: Horror!
When I lived in Los Angeles, I had friends always telling you got to check out Frank & Sons. One of friends got tricked into going thinking it was an Antiquing event, boy was he wrong! If you need to get that baseball card, back issue comic book, or Transformers toy then head to the best swap meet on the West Coast – Frank & Sons!
I’m still jet lag after 3 days, our Ramen and a Half team had a great time in New York City and checking out New York Comic Con 2013 which took place this past weekend – October 10-13, 2013. Stay tuned to our Retrenders.com and our YouTube Channel for videos from NYCC 2013!
Day One of Stockton-Con 2013 … wait, it’s the same joke again. I’ll stop it. Our Ramen crew took a road trip to the one-day comic convention to Stockton, CA – Stockton-Con 2013 held in the Stockton Sports Arena.
The Ramen crew heads up to Stockton-Con 2013 in downtown Stockton, CA. This is the second year of Stockton-Con, the last one was held in a high school gym, now the ‘con has moved to the Stockton Arena. They guys walked around looking for comics and other neat stuff. Ramon interviews J Salvador of SuperEmoFriends. Along for the ride, is Ramen friend and comic book shop owner Juan from CFA (Comic & Figure Addicts).
Since the beginning of comics, superheroes have dominated the comic book pages, but the creative team of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby didn’t just do superheroes, they also put science fiction genre onto the comic book format. Titan Books has collected various science fiction stories by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s featuring the likes of “Solar Legion” and “Blue Bolt” in The Simon & Kirby Library – Science Fiction.
The Ramen crew interviews Spiderman artist Humberto Ramos @ Big Wow! Comicfest 2013. He talks about his passion and love for drawing comics.
Our Retrenders crew may be tired and sleep deprived from the Big Wow! Comcifest in San Jose this past weekend, but we hope to bring you exclusive interviews from various comic book artists, cosplayers and other cool happenings from the event, so come back to our site for video updates.
When I first saw these Marvel themed sneakers, I immediately though of my son back when he was five years old wearing his little spider-man shoes and his power ranger backpack to school.
Fast forward to this year and, with the success of the Avenger movie, adults now have a chance to wear their own superhero sneaks but with more style. These fantastic kicks from Reebok lets you proudly display your favorite hero on your feet – without having to feel too embarrassed when walking around in them.
Check Marvel.com for more info on these kicks – Reebok x Spiderman & Reebok x Avengers.
San Diego Comic Con 2012 came and went, but here’s a photo gallery recap of the various happenings at the ‘Con by our Guest Photographer and Friend of Retrenders, Winky.
