Miguel Mestre Concept – My Desk

Photo via Design Milk – My Desk by Miguel Mestre

This is such a great idea. I already have a stack of paper on my desk to doodle and take notes, so why not make the stack of paper into a full sized desk?  Though this is still a concept design, with this I can finally draw on my table top all I want and still have a clean desk everyday. Although I would hate to spill coffee on this thing.

Themed designed by Karrie Lee, Hong Kong – UTGP 2012 Coca-Cola Contest.

I love Uniqlo and can’t wait until they open their store here in San Francisco, but for now I’ll just read and buy their stuff on the internet. Recently, they held a design contest and they have just announced the winner.  This year’s contest Uniqlo was looking for the best Coca Cola themed design.  The winner was from Hong Kong, designer Karrie Lee.  Big kudos for a fresh take.

Interview with Luke Chueh

bearingtheunbearablebookHere at Retrenders I had the pleasure of interviewing Luke about his just released book, The Art of Luke Chueh – Bearing the Unbearable published by Titan Books, and got to know a little more of the painter and graphic designer.

RTNDR:  I see this book is a great collection of your paintings, acrylic statues, and even showing your skateboard art, but we know you have an amazing collection of vinyl work. Will we see a book highlighting your vinyl art?

LUKE:  I think creating a book of my 3-D work would be a great idea. Maybe in couple years after I’ve built up a large enough portfolio.

RTNDR:  How would you categorize or characterize your art or should we even categorize art?

LUKE:  Years ago, I used to spend time thinking of new names for the genre of my art. I always felt “Lowbrow” had demeaning connotations and “Pop Surreal” only told a part of the story. Word combinations like “Post Brow”, “Idealized Art”, or “Contemptorary” became labels I threw around. But lately I’ve sort of “come to terms” with Lowbrow & Pop Surrealism. To dismiss these would be to dismiss the artists whose work inspired label, and if fans and critics consider my art to be of the genre, then whom am I to tell them they’re wrong? But to be completely honest, I would prefer having my work simply recognized as “contemporary art” (ie. Art that is characteristic of the present).

The Coolest Library in the World

Here in San Francisco, we have some wonderfully designed public libraries, but this public library in Netherlands takes the cake.

This public library is located in Spijkenisse, Netherlands and “Book Mountain” took two years to complete by the firm MVRDV.  Think of this as indoor landscaping architecture.

A Little Shoulder Candy Never Hurts!

I’ve lived in the City long enough to realize that a bag…a handbag, shoulder bag, messenger bag, man purse, satchel, or “European Carry All“…is a necessary accessory for the laptop/book/iPad/file-carrying urbanite.

So, unless you valet your vehicle or ride anything that has less than four tires, then parking in San Francisco is nothing short of frustrating, few, and FAR!  Why not carry your valuable necessities in a stylish and durable bag?

Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama

LV x Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama might not be a common household name to us here in the US but she is a very influential artist. She has worked in a wide variety of mediums, including painting and sculpture, most of which exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colors. She has also inspired Andy Warhol and many other modern artists. Louis Vuitton is working with her on a line of bags that’s coming out this October 2012.

Anthony Dickens’ Japanese Paper Lanterns

Tekio by Anthony Dickens, photo from Cool Hunting

I really like this concept of lighting.  Our current lighting setup is very one or two dimensional – it can take several light bulbs to fill up a room.  A bunch of fluorescent lights are able to fill up a room but it’s not very appealing to the eye. This concept blends the functionality of lighting with aesthetic sensibilities.

Mixtape Table

by Jeff Skierka Designs

This is a real coffee table in the shape of a cassette tape at 12:1 scale. My son, who is 9, has no idea what a cassette tape, turntable, or VCR is. He’s still amazed when I tell him that TV used to be only in black and white. Kids are just so darned funny these days.

The 411 on Mirrorless DSLR (MILC)

If you had recently stopped by your local electronics store, you may have seen more advertising pushed on a new type of digital camera class – the mirrorless DSLR.  These cameras look like digital point and shoots (POS) but they have the ability to change lenses.

Mirrorless Interchangeable-Lens Camera (MILC)

Mirrorless Interchangeable-lens cameras (MILC) are just that – they are cameras without the mirrors.  MILC cameras use electronic viewfinders, which is just the rear LCD screen, to look at your subject.  Moreover,  some have no viewfinders at all.  Because of this, MILCs can be smaller and lighter, similar to POS digital cameras.

Mirrorless DSLRs use interchangeable lens just like the DSLR’s do.  Now you have the option to use regular pancake lenses, wide-angle lenses, and telephoto lenses, unlike digital POS cameras where the lenses are fixed with limited zooming and focusing capabilities.
