French-Chilean Hip Hop Artist – Ana Tijoux

The French-Chilean musician, Ana Tijoux has been one of the most prominent independent MC hip-hop artists and has recently seen her popularity rise.  She built her reputation from the ground up in the independent music scene with her group Makiza, in Chile, in the 1990s.  Then in 2001, through some unforeseen moments in life, she decided to break apart from the band and the music scene all together, and went back to France.

It wasn’t until 2004 that she returned to Chile and connected with funk Chilean band Aluzinati, where she then became a featured artist in Control Machete’s album, Uno Dos Bandera, and worked on a soundtrack with Julieta Venegas. She even reunited with Makiza for a short time, but realized she really wanted to pursue a solo career.

In 2007, she released her solo album, Kaos, and she was nominated in Latin America’s version of the MTV Video Music Awards as Best New Artist.

In 2009, she released her 2nd solo album titled, 1977, which was a return to her rap roots and a homage to hip hop. The album was autobiographical and dealt with the complications she endured in life.

Star Wars Origami

Where was this book when I was young and too poor to buy Kenner’s Star Wars action figures back in the 70’s? I could have folded my own Star War heroes but then, now that I think about it, I would have gotten my butt kicked by the neighborhood kids for having origami. Last week I posted a Yoda origami and it was a pretty creative art piece. With this book, you can extend beyond Yoda and create R2-D2 and the Millennium Falcon – plus it includes specially designed origami paper.

The Sushi Bazooka

I am a high volume sushi-eater at home. My wife just can’t keep up with the wrapping while I wolf down the sushi. Now with this gadget, I might have just met my match. Just simply open the device, put in the rice, fish, etc, and then shoot it out like a caulk gun. Heck, maybe this weekend, I can just put to use my caulk gun from Home Depot before this comes through the mail from Japan.

The Twenty-Year Death by Ariel S. Winter

winter20yeardeathbookIf you like sexy women, French accents, booze, cigarettes, and murders to solve, you will want to read Ariel S. Winters debut crime novel – “The Twenty-Year Death.”  The crime tale begins with a dead body on the streets of a small French town. What unravels are three complete stories that are interconnected – making one epic narrative. The first story – “Malvineau Prison” takes place in France in 1931; Book 2 – “The Falling Star” takes place in 1941 and involves a private detective keeping an eye on a studio’s leading lady in Hollywood; and the final Book – “Police at the Funeral” happens in 1951 and tells the tale of one man’s last chance at redemption.

This is a great debut novel by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the different writing styles in each book. If you are not in the mood for summer blockbuster flicks at the theater or sitting at home playing with your iPad, may I suggest some page turning thrills with “The Twenty-Year Death.”

Interview with The Twenty-Year Death Author Ariel S. Winter

winter20yeardeathbookNext week on August 7th 2012, Titan Books will be releasing Ariel S. Winter’s debut crime noir novel “The Twenty-Year Death.”  Our Retrenders staff had a chance to interview Mr. Winter and talk a little about the book, his influences, and more:

+++++++++++++

RTNDR:  How did you come up with the idea to start The Twenty-Year Death? What inspired you to write not just one story but three complete novels written in the style of three different iconic mystery writers?

Ariel: I originally set out to write a different book. It was going to have a frame narrative, and within that frame would have been full novels of various genres. So it was in that context that I wrote Malniveau Prison in the style of Georges Simenon. When I decided to jettison the original idea but keep Malniveau Prison and expand it into what became The Twenty-Year Death, it only made sense to continue with other pastiche/homages. The character that I was going to follow from book to book was an American writer living in France in the 1930s, and so many of the writers who did that in real life, like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, ended up writing for Hollywood at some point. And Hollywood led naturally to Raymond Chandler in the 1940s. So with ten years between the first two books I figured there should be another ten years between book two and book three, and the list of choices of master crime writers from the 1950s was basically Jim Thompson and Patricia Highsmith. At the time, I’d read more Thompson and his style fit better for the subject of the book.

Insane Coffee Madness: Death Wish

deathwishcoffeebag00I am a 3 cups-a-day coffee drinker.  Heck, I even own Starbucks stocks because I like coffee so much, so when I saw this advertisement for the world strongest coffee, naturally I was intrigued. The minute you enter the website, there are disclaimers and warnings letting you know this is a highly caffeinated drink. While I was reading comments that this stuff should be illegal, I was already looking for my credit card. It claims to have 200% more caffeine than a typical coffee, hmmm, you know this might make me become too productive at work.
