Frankie’s Garage: MiniVan Time!

hondavac

Honda Odyssesy Touring Elite, Image via Car & Driver.

Guess what’s the biggest news at the New York Auto show. No, it’s not the new Ferrari or a new Lamborghini. And no, it’s not about how fast a car is going from 0 to 60mph, but instead, it’s the vacuum cleaner installed inside the new 2014 Honda Odyssey. The HondaVac is going to be included in the Odyssey Touring Elite and can run for eight minutes when the car is off and longer when the engine is running. This is also a dry vac, so as long as your kids don’t spill their favorite soda on the way to Costco, you’ll have a very clean interior.

Solid Gray “Bass Pack”

Solid Gray Boom

Did you ever get that feeling that when you first discover a great song track and you just want to share it with everybody? Well, strap one of these backpacks on and let the world know what you’re listening to – just be careful with annoying the people around you because you’re playing the music too loud. The design was a collaborative effort with Portland’s wonderfully imaginative portable sound system makers Case of Bass and the progressive backpack company Solid Gray. The backpack is still in the works and should be coming out in the next few months – you can see more pics of the backpack on Case of Bass’ blog here.

segacastleofillusion

Way back in the 1990s, SEGA released a neat little 2D platformer game with Disney character Mickey Mouse.   The Castle of Illusion side-scroller was a hit game for the Genesis/Mega Drive and found it’s way onto the Master System and Game Gear consoles too.  Two sequels would also come – Land of Illusion (1992) and World of Illusion (1993).

Geek Out: Sega Master System Sofa

SMS 00

The Sega Master System (SMS) didn’t get the props or sales numbers like it’s rival Nintendo Entertainment System during the 1980s, but I thought it had great games and graphics.  And I still have the system and it still works!!!  Here’s a one-off tribute by French video game blogger Subby-kun and his wife Subbinette.  The sofa is the main unit while the pillows make the two joysticks.

Fun with a Pencil by Andrew Loomis

Fun With A Pencil Andrew Loomis

Who doesn’t want to draw comics like Jack Kirby, Will Eisner and Jim Lee?  Nobody starts off the gates drawing comics, cartoons and creating iconic characters without the basics.  The A-B-C’s of drawing is what gets you from Point A to Point B.  In our day of digital technology we can find art instruction on-line.  I learned my cooking & cocktail recipes and Photoshop tutorials on YouTube.  Sometimes, you need a little old school instruction and we’re going back to the early 20th century with commercial artist Andrew Loomis (1892-1959).  Mr Loomis was well known for his various instructional art books and many of these books are not in print anymore.  Fun with a Pencil was published back in 1939 and thanks to Titan Books, this instructional art book is in bookstore shelves.

The Misfits are BACK!

jem

One of the hit cartoons back in the 1980s was Jem & the Holograms and the action figure dolls by Hasbro were pretty cool.  Each character came with their individual musical accessories, the figures were poseable and it came with a rad cassette tape of songs from the cartoon series.  With the approval from Hasbro, Integrity Toys has been making high-end Jem & the Holograms figures and just announced their line of the girl-band – The Misfits, arch-rivals of Jem & the Holograms.

The Art of a Video Store

levideo

Most of us have probably moved on from stepping into a video store to using Netflix by mail if not by digital cable at the push of a menu button, but the truth be told is that we lose a great deal of social interaction, adventure and discovery about films  first hand, because where else could you find unusual categories, collections, to even never before seen films that went nowhere but into a video store that exists for the interest of a cinephile, and of course operated by people who love the art of cinema and have made the video store their business to provide that missing, if not, hard to find film you’ve been searching for.

Create your own Foldable Gift!

foldable

Just found the perfect gift to give to my friends and family this year. Forget the jewelry for my wife, the Xbox games for my son, the rum cake for my friends, I’m giving them something that is special, unique, and memorable – a foldable me. Anyone can go onto foldable.me and download a pic of themselves and *Boom*, in two weeks you can give a little mini cardboard copy of yourself and have this next to them all the time. Personally, it’s be nice if these foldable.me figures came in different costumes like having one in an army fatigue outfit, or as Batman, Predator, or maybe even Luke Skywalker.

G-Shock with Bluetooth

gshockbluetooth

One of the great things of owning an iPhone, is looking through all the available accessories and gadgets that work with it. One such gadget I came across, is this Bluetooth enabled G-Shock watch from Casio. I love G-Shocks for their durability and with this one, you can pair your iPhone with it and be alerted to Facebook and Twitter events, calls, or email. It can sync-up time to your phone’s clock and it even includes an iPhone finder feature just in case you misplace your precious smartphone on those “what was I doing again?” days.
