Arrow: Heroes & Villains
Even though I grew up as a Marvel fanboy, I did buy my fair share of DC Comics, but I was never a fan of the Green Arrow. That all changed when I watched the first episode of Arrow; now I’m addicted to all things Green Arrow. I’ve actually made trips to comic book stores and bought many of Mike Grell’s legendary Green Arrow run and picked up the underrated trade paperback Green Arrow: Year One by writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock. Already knee-deep into Arrow’s 3rd Season, this Titan Book’s Arrow: Heroes & Villains release comes in at the right time.
Elementary: The Ghost Line
A MTA worker is found dead in his very own apartment. What can you say, it’s New York City’s toughest area, Hell’s Kitchen. Well, it’s present day, so it’s more urban hipster living in the area and coffee shops with Wi-Fi access, but Daredevil won’t come to the rescue. Instead, enter Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson! Based on the CBS hit TV show Elementary, which is a modern day twist of the famous literary detective Sherlock Holmes set in present-day New York City. “The Ghost Line” story by Adam Christopher takes place around the 3rd TV season of Elementary.

Anime on Display 2015
Last Weekend our Ramen crew visited Anime On Display, an anime convention in Burlingame, CA. Here’s Eddie’s and Ramon’s take on the con:
Eddie from Ramen and a Half – Last time I went to AOD it was when it was still in San Francisco’s Japantown 2 years ago. The venue for this year was at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame (see our Capcom-Cup 2013 video here to see what the place looks like). Since Ramon and I have been to this venue before, we were curious to see how an anime convention would utilize the space. Capcom-Cup was centralized in one location, where as AOD used a lot more of the hotel space. There was a dealers room, several rooms for panels and anime viewing, and a game room on the other side of the hotel that also featured live performances. The convention itself was not crowded, it had just enough people where it always seemed lively. The dealers room was not too big either, a good number of artists and dealers with a few industry booths. Personally, I dislike crowded conventions so i enjoyed being able to move freely here. The game room had a great selection of games like Capcom vs Snk 2 and Street Fighter III 3rd Strike on arcade cabs and a selection of games on console.
My only complaint about this convention was the parking. The official lot filled up quick and when we tried to go inside, we were soon turned away and told to park anywhere else “at you own risk!” Safe to say, the parking attendant wasn’t very helpful. So we hunted for street parking around the corner but I ended up parking across the street in the private lots with many signs everywhere warning you of the potential of getting towed if parked here. Honestly, it was hard to enjoy the convention with the fear of your car getting ticketed or towed.
My favorite thing about AOD was their innovative registration system. Unlike other conventions with a cutoff date for their pre-registration, you were able to register for a badge at anytime before attending and you were able to pick it up when you arrived. This reminded me of websites like Target, Walmart or Best Buy that allow you to buy something online and get it in-store with same day pick up. It was really convenient and just made the registration process so easy!
One thing I will miss about it being in SF’s Japantown is definitely the food. It was hard to get food at this venue that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I hope in the future they will address the food issue. On a related note, the Maid/Butler Cafe had no food when I went but the servers there did serve tea and were really fun to hang out with. They would play games with their customers and just have a good time and talk to you as well. We were definitely treated like royalty. All in all, if you are looking for an anime convention that isn’t too crowded and just a nice place to chill plus meet some cool people, then this is for you.

Dragon Age Inquisition Review
Picked up Dragon Age Inquisition for my PS4 on the day of its release, hoping that this game would make up for the faults of its predecessor, and, well, I can’t stop playing it. So much so, I haven’t even touched my Far Cry 4 yet. Currently, I’ve already clocked over 35 hours into the game – eating up most of my playing time are all the side quests, such as, picking up herbs and materials to craft new items. I haven’t even gone through half of the main story, which i have to say is a pretty decent story, but far from perfect.
2014 Central Valley – Lindsay Lowrider Car Show
Welcome back to Lindsay’s Finest 2nd Annual Lowrider Car Show at McDermont’s Field House. Retrenders Spotlight with Ruben Gonzalez and Ramona Padilla were able to bring you not only beautifully stylized lowrider cars, but a touch of history on early Chevy Impalas and their aesthetic differences between 1960 to 1964 with Gabriel Calderon and Marcelo Mota. We also get a personal experience on how judging Lowrider vehicles in a show can be with Harvey Reyes . Then how a Lowrider owner feels about his car, and we find out what the Real Housewives of Lowriding are all about.
RETRENDERS SPOTLIGHT
Producer: Johnny Moreno
Executive Producer: Stephen Jang
Music: Kevin Macleod
MUSIC also USED: Snippet of “Is it Love “ by Bob Marley and The Wailers, 23 seconds in length and incidentally captured due to live ambient recording.
NOTES: This Spotlight Lowrider Episode was produced in the same fashion as last year’s – single handedly, on the fly, documentary style. The only difference was that I filmed the show in HD and decided to give you more interview stories that encompasses the production and some of the people that make up a Lowrider Car show (specifically this year’s). As a result, this Retrenders SPOTLIGHT show turned out to be 26 minutes long, informative, entertaining and it moves along pretty fast. You’ll feel that you’ve just sat down and watched a five minute show. – I think this is as close I’ll get to a Jay Leno episode on Lowriders!

The Tokyo Diorama Set
If you weren’t satisfied with this year’s lame Bandai America’s Godzilla Destruction City playset, why not try ALGERNON Product Geocraper – Tokyo Scenery Vol. 1 series? Yupe, this toy line is called GEO-CRAPER, something got lost in translation here, but I digress. This is a great way to build a mini-toy diorama playset and putting your toy kaijus on display.
A1 Presents Carpe DIEm
We caught a glimpse of this cool looking comic strip Carpe DIEm earlier this year with the Titan Comics/Atomeka anthology collection Monster Massacre Vol. 2. Now this collected edition offers 104 pages of action/adventure and off-beat humor. Carpe DIEm is a team of super agents named after each day of the week hoping to save the world from crazy evil villains.
Carpe DIEm is formed by the mysterious Sir 8th Day who is a little eccentric and clumsy and usually decisions are made by his butler Jude. Jude is like Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy, Jude was created in a test tube and now is an intelligent talking Koala bear. Sir Sunday is an ex-Triad gangsta and is the old and wise field general for the team. Like all super-agent teams, you gotta have a sniper, and that is teenager Lady Saturday. What team doesn’t have a ninja? Like G.I. Joe, Carpe DIEm has Sir Friday the ninja assassin who rarely speaks. And these guys even have a Doctor Strange like character, that is Sir Thursday, the Shaman sorcerer who combines Eastern and Western magic. Like all super teams, you gotta have a big fat guy, Sir Wednesday, he’s the muscle. And why not, let’s throw-in that loud obnoxious like American, Sir Tuesday.

Inker Matt Banning aka BATT @ Big Wow! ComicFest 2014
When I started out with comics all I cared about was the artist drawing the issue like the Jim Lee’s and Marc Silvestri’s of the world, and I could care less about the writers, inkers or colorists. But as I developed my comic book knowledge, I began to learn about writers, inkers and colorists I liked too. Our Ramen host Ramon Angel got back into comics not just because the art, but the inking by Matt Banning aka BATT on his Green Lantern runs.
